I have installed one of the Hunter Systems smoke generators in a large, 4" scale, passenger hauling electric powered traction engine.
The unit is mounted in the top of the chimney with a fan below to adjust the air flow through the unit.
It produces a good amount of smoke and has fooled quite a few people, including experienced 'steam' men, into thinking the engine is actually a coal fired steam engine.

The only reason this isn't a 5 star review is the warranty restrictions!
I have installed the unit, together with a small twin fan blower in a Bachmann Annie ('G' scale railway loco) Despite risking the loss of warranty, I have drilled 2 additional holes to match/enable the fan to blast pulses of air through the smoke unit in time with the 'chuff' sound and am very pleased with the result... oh! and I shortened the brass chimney by a fifth and slightly flattened the exit point to spread the smoke.... great effect!
